How to Make Authentic Italian Biscotti at Home

Biscotti are a beloved Italian cookie that originated in the Tuscan region and are known for their crunchy texture. Making authentic Italian biscotti at home is easier than you might think, and the delightful result is perfect for enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea. Follow this guide to create your very own delicious biscotti.

Ingredients

To start, gather the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup whole almonds (can be substituted with hazelnuts or walnuts)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Follow these steps to make your authentic Italian biscotti:

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Create a well in the center and add the eggs, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Mix until combined.
3. Gently fold in the whole almonds. The dough will be sticky, but this is normal.

Step 2: Shape the Biscotti

1. Dust your work surface with flour and turn out the dough.
2. Divide the dough in half and shape each portion into a log about 12 inches long and 2 inches wide. Place the logs on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring there's space between them as they will expand while baking.

Step 3: Bake the Biscotti Logs

1. Bake the logs in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until they are lightly golden and firm to the touch.
2. Remove the logs from the oven and let them cool for about 10 minutes on the baking sheet.

Step 4: Slice and Second Bake

1. Carefully transfer the logs to a cutting board and slice them diagonally into 1-inch thick pieces.
2. Return the slices to the baking sheet, cut side up, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, turning them halfway through. This ensures they become crispy and golden brown.

Step 5: Cool and Serve

1. Once baked, remove the biscotti from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
2. Once cooled, they can be enjoyed immediately, stored in an airtight container, or even dipped in chocolate for an extra special treat.

Tips for Perfect Biscotti

To ensure your biscotti turn out perfectly every time, consider these tips:

  • Experiment with flavors by adding chocolate chips, dried fruits, or spices like cinnamon.
  • For a softer texture, reduce the second bake time slightly.
  • Store biscotti in an airtight container for up to two weeks—if they last that long!

Making authentic Italian biscotti at home is rewarding and can easily become a beloved family recipe. Enjoy the crunchy, nutty goodness of your homemade biscotti with your favorite beverage!
