How to Cook Italian-Style Stuffed Peppers

Italian-style stuffed peppers are a delicious and savory dish that celebrates the rich flavors of Italian cuisine. These colorful peppers are packed with a flavorful filling that typically includes a combination of ground meat, rice, herbs, and cheese. Follow these steps to create a mouthwatering version of this classic dish.

Ingredients

  • 4 large bell peppers (any color)
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Peppers

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the tops off the bell peppers and remove the seeds and membranes. If necessary, trim the bottom of the peppers slightly to help them stand upright. Place the prepared peppers in a baking dish.

Step 2: Cook the Filling

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the ground beef or Italian sausage, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

Once the meat is cooked, stir in the cooked rice, crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, and season with salt and pepper. Mix well and let the filling simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Remove from heat and stir in half of the shredded mozzarella cheese.

Step 4: Stuff the Peppers

Using a spoon, carefully fill each bell pepper with the meat and rice mixture, packing it down gently to fit. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top of each stuffed pepper.

Step 5: Bake the Stuffed Peppers

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Once done, remove the stuffed peppers from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving. These Italian-style stuffed peppers make for a hearty and satisfying meal, perfect for dinner or as a flavorful option for meal prep.

This delicious stuffed pepper recipe not only highlights Italian flavors but is also customizable. Feel free to experiment with different meats, grains, and spices to make the dish your own. Enjoy your culinary journey into Italian cuisine with these delightful stuffed peppers!
