How to Make Italian Bread for Beginners

Italian bread is a staple in many households, known for its crusty exterior and soft, airy interior. Making Italian bread at home can seem daunting for beginners, but with a step-by-step guide, you can achieve delicious results. Here’s how to make Italian bread from scratch.

Ingredients You'll Need

  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups of warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Step 1: Prepare the Yeast

Begin by activating the yeast. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes, until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the flour along with the olive oil. Stir the mixture until it starts to come together into a dough.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8 to 10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. You can sprinkle a little more flour if the dough is sticky, but be careful not to add too much.

Step 4: Let the Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm environment for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size. A warm spot, like an oven that’s turned off but lighted for a few minutes, works well.

Step 5: Shape the Bread

After the dough has risen, punch it down to release excess air. Transfer it back to a floured surface and shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller rolls, depending on your preference. For traditional Italian bread, you can shape it into a long loaf.

Step 6: Second Rise

Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover it again and let it rise for another 30 to 45 minutes until it has puffed up.

Step 7: Preheat the Oven

While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place an empty pan or dish on the bottom rack of the oven to create steam while baking.

Step 8: Bake the Bread

Once the dough has completed its second rise, make a few slashes on the top with a sharp knife to allow steam to escape. Place the bread in the oven and carefully pour a cup of hot water into the preheated pan below to create steam. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 9: Cool and Serve

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. This step is vital for achieving the best texture. Once cooled, slice and serve your homemade Italian bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, or your favorite spreads.
