How to Make Italian Sauce for Lasagna

Making a delicious Italian sauce for lasagna is an essential step in creating this classic dish. A rich, flavorful sauce enhances the layers of pasta, cheese, and meat, making your lasagna unforgettable. Below is a simple recipe and tips on how to prepare the perfect Italian sauce for lasagna.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup red wine (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, ensuring it doesn’t burn.

Step 2: Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the pan. Use a spatula to break the meat apart, cooking until browned. This should take about 7-10 minutes. Once browned, drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 3: Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir in the tomato paste. Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. If using red wine, add it at this stage. The wine will add depth to the sauce.

Step 4: Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For a richer flavor, simmer longer (up to 2 hours if time allows). The longer it simmers, the more developed the flavors will be.

Step 5: Taste and Adjust

Once the sauce is ready, taste it and adjust the seasoning if needed. You may want to add more salt, pepper, or herbs based on your preference.

Tips for the Perfect Sauce

  • Using fresh herbs instead of dried ones can enhance the flavor even more.
  • For a deeper flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Feel free to incorporate vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, or zucchini for added nutrition.

Now that you have your Italian sauce ready, you can assemble your lasagna with layers of pasta, cheese, and this flavorful sauce. Enjoy your homemade lasagna that’s sure to impress everyone at the dinner table!
